This upcoming weekend, University of South Florida MFA candidate Tanner Simon presents a festive collection of spooky paintings in H3ll’s Kitchen, a Halloween-themed exhibition at Howard W. Blake School of the Arts. The collection’s opening reception on Friday, October 20, from 4-7 PM, will feature some of Simon’s towering works and an all-ages costume party. Costumes optional. Trick-or-treaters welcome.
The installation explores the act and experience of viewing art while engaging in the physicality of a large-scale painting. Simon’s work includes vibrant color fields, jarring imagery such as bat-monsters and goblin-pasta, and matte applications of oil paint that defy the traditionally shiny medium. The paintings conspire around an obstructive pillar, playfully and enigmatically linking each work together.
Tanner Simon, a Tri-State native, is an MFA candidate at the University of South Florida and teaches beginning drawing. Simon has shown in the Tampa Bay Area, as well as in Pennsylvania, New York, and Maine.
